Carbohydrate Counting Exchange Flash Cards

This set of 120 flash cards are designed to help Dietitians to teach carbohydrate counting to people with type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes who count their carbohydrate foods in exchanges (15 grams of carbohydrate).

There are 81 different carbohydrate foods, with each card visually showing a 1 exchange portion of the food. The pack contains multiples of common carbohydrate foods (like bread, rice, pasta etc.), and also some non-carbohydrate foods to allow people to visually build a whole meal. The majority of foods included are core foods, however some treat foods are included.

They can be used in group or individual education sessions in a variety of ways – such as general carb awareness, sorting by carbohydrate quality, or to apply carb exchanges to building a meal or even daily meal planning.

Carbohydrate Counting Meal Plates

This set of 14 different A4 size meal plates shows a range of common Australian meals. The aim of this pictorial resource is to help people with diabetes improve their carbohydrate estimation at meal times.

The front of each card shows a colour picture of the meal. On the reverse of the card is a picture of the meal highlighting each of the carbohydrate foods, the amount of carbohydrate in each of these foods, and the total carbohydrate in the meal (all in grams of carbohydrate).

The meals pictured are a range of everyday meals, takeaway and restaurant choices.

The plates can be used across all types of diabetes with people who count carbohydrates. Separate activity sheets are included for counting in grams, exchanges, or portions. They can also be used to improve carbohydrate awareness.

As part of our commitment to quality, Diabetes Victoria will conduct an evaluation of these resources. We may contact people who have purchased this resource to participate in this evaluation process. Participation in the evaluation process is voluntary.’
